ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A process for the vapor phase mono-, di, or tri- bromination of an aromatic compound which comprises reacting bromine with an aromatic compound selected from the group consisting of benzene, biphenyl, naphthalene, anthracene, thiophene, benzothiophene, benzopyridine, terphenyl, benzophenone, diphenyl sulfone, diphenyl ether, chlorobenzene, fluorobenzene, chloronaphthalene, benzonitrile, phenol, 1-naphthol, 2-naphthol, pyridine, chloropyridine and iodobenzene in the presence of molecular oxygen over a catalyst comprising an oxidizing transition metal and a alumina, silica or titania solid support.
