ABSTRACT The synthesis of fluorinated dimethyl ethers of the formula CF2HOCClxFyH3-(x+y) wherein x is 0, 1 or 2; y is 1, 2 or 3; and wherein (x+y) is 1, 2 or 3. The process involves chlorination of methyl difluoromethyl ether in the presence of oxygen to form a chlorinated reaction product of the formula CF2HOCH3-zClz wherein z is 1 or 2, and wherein the formation of CF2HOCCl3 is inhibited. The resulting compound(s) is then fluorinated with HF before or after separation, to give a fluorinated reaction product including the aforementioned fluorinated dimethyl ethers.
