VARIABLE COLOUR MULTIPLEXED DISPLAY SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A variable colour multiplexed display system is disclosed that comprises a plurality of variable colour display elements, each having display control inputs, colour control inputs, and an enable input. A timing generator is employed for defining in cyclic sequence time periods corresponding to respective display elements. During each time period, a character code and a colour code for the corresponding display element are presented to the display control inputs and to the colour control inputs of all display elements. The enable input of the corresponding display element is activated during the time period for causing the corresponding display element to exhibit a character determined by the character code in a colour determined by the colour code.
