The present invention provides a variable compliance joystick (100) with mechanical and software customization, and with integrated control capability, and a method of systematically determining the best mechanical settings and compensatory algorithms to embed in the joystick (100) to offer an individual with substantial upper extremity motor impairments a personal fit and maximum function. The joystick may include components for varying the compliance and damping of the joystick shaft (104). The method may include providing the user access to operate the joystick, operatively connecting the joystick to a driving simulator, displaying an icon on the driving simulator, controlling movement of the icon by the joystick, evaluating performance of the user based upon the user~s ability to control movement of the icon, and modifying hardware settings and software algorithms for the joystick based upon the evaluation.
L'invention concerne une manette (100) à adaptabilité variable, permettant une personnalisation mécanique et logicielle, et pouvant présenter une commande intégrée. L'invention concerne un procédé de détermination systématique des meilleurs réglages mécaniques et des algorithmes compensatoires à intégrer dans la manette (100), pour permettre, à une personne présentant de sérieux handicapes moteurs au niveau des extrémités supérieures, d'obtenir une manette appropriée à ses besoins et dotée d'une fonctionnalité optimale. Cette manette peut comprendre des composants permettant de varier l'adaptabilité et l'amortissement de son arbre (104). Ce procédé peut donner accès à l'utilisateur à cette manette : ce procédé consiste à relier de manière fonctionnelle la manette à un simulateur d'entraînement, à afficher une icône sur le simulateur d'entraînement, à commander le déplacement de cette icône par le biais de la manette, à évaluer la performance de l'utilisateur en fonction des capacités de l'utilisateur à commander le déplacement de l'icône, et à modifier les réglage matériels et les algorithmes logiciels de la manette, en fonction de cette évaluation.
