ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A variable delay device for delaying an electric signal comprising a bar-shaped magnetostrictive member to be a transmitting path of a supersonic wave, an input transducer for converting an electric signal to a supersonic wave and an output transducer for converting a super sonic wave to an electric signal both provided at both end portions of the magnetostrictive member, respectively, and a magnetic field producing device provided between the input and output transducers for supplying to the magnetostrictive member with a magnetic field which varies in intension in a direction along which the magnetostrictive member elongates. The magnetic field supplied to the magnetostrictive member is controlled by a control signal applied to the magnetic field producing device to vary Young's modulus of the magnetostrictive member and, as a result, to vary the velocity of the supersonic wave transmitting therein, thereby to control the delay time of a delayed electric signal.
