A variable displacement refrigerant compressor is disclosed which is of a type that comprises a housing forming therein a crankcase, a suction chamber and a suction passage communicable with the suction chamber, a tiltable swash plate disposed in the crank case for varying the displacement of the compressor by changing the stroke of a working piston in accordance with the magnitude of cooling load, a cylinder block having formed axially therethrough a central bore for accommodating therein a shutoff member in the form of a slidable spool for shutting off the fluid communication between the suction chamber and the suction passage, a drive shaft supported it the crankcase for driving the swash plate at a variable angle, a radial bearing disposed in the central bore for supporting the rear end portion of the drive shaft. According to the invention, it is so arranged that at least the peripheral surface area of the front end surface of the cylinder block surrounding the front opening of the central bore is positioned ahead of the center of the radial bearing which is defined by an imaginary plane extending perpendicularly to the drive shaft axis and passing through the mid point of the radial bearing as determined along the drive shaft.

Cette invention concerne un compresseur frigorifique à cylindrée variable du type comprenant un corps dans lequel on trouve un carter, une chambre d'aspiration et un passage d'aspiration ouvert sur la chambre d'aspiration, un plateau oscillant placé dans le carter et servant à faire varier la cylindrée du compresseur en modifiant la course du piston en fonction de la charge calorifique, un bloc-cylindres comportant un alésage axial centré où se loge un obturateur sous la forme d'un tiroir coulissant servant à isoler la chambre d'aspiration du passage d'aspiration, un arbre d'entraînement supporté dans le carter et servant à animer le plateau oscillant, un palier radial disposé dans l'alésage et servant à supporter l'extrémité arrière de l'arbre d'entraînement. Selon l'invention, au moins la surface avant du bloc-cylindres entourant immédiatement l'ouverture avant de l'alésage centré se trouve en avant du plan de symétrie du palier radial qui est un plan imaginaire perpendiculaire à l'axe de l'arbre d'entraînement et divisant le palier en deux moitiés égales.
