An electronic coin validator for connection to the chassis of a coin line telephone is capable of being remotely updated with a new initial rate. The electronic coin validator includes a validator housing, a coin passageway, at least one coin sensor, an interface circuit, a control means and a memory. The control means contacts a host computer to acquire a new initial rate and stores it in memory as a current initial rate, and processes signals from the sensors to validate coins. When the total value of acceptable coins at least equals the current initial rate, a credit signal signal is generated that equals or exceeds the initial rate preset in the payphone chassis.
