2066758 9105198 PCTABS00004 A pipe connector (10) which may be varied in length and a method for installing the connector is disclosed. Also disclosed is a tool (64, 65) for aiding in the fabrication of the female portion of the connector. The connector consists of telescoping male and female pipes (14 and 12) which are joined by the action of a wire spring (28) positioned in recesses (22 and 54) in the two pipes. The recesses are designed to allow only one-way movement between the telescoping pipes until such time as a release groove (56) is reached. The release groove (56) is formed in male pipes (14) beyond the normal operating range of the connector. When the wire spring (28) is positioned in the release groove (56), the pipes may be separated. The tool (64 and 66) described allows for on site fabrication of the recess (22) in female pipe (12).
