ABSTRACT A signal generator includes: a first frequency- divider of multibit construction for frequency-dividing clock pulses; a second frequency-divider of multibit construction for frequency-dividing the output signal from the first frequency-divider; a comparing circuit which compares the bit outputs of the first frequency-divider with those of the second frequency-divider and produces a coincident signal when all the bit outputs coincide therebetween; and a pulse genera- tor circuit for generating a series of pulses of which the pulse width successively widens, the leading and trailing edges of each pulse being determined by the output signal of the first frequency-dividing circuit, and the coincident signal of the comparing circuit. The signal generator permits stable generation of sawtooth vertical scanning signals in television systems, and enables the use of Class D amplifiers in vertical output circuits.
