The invention relates to methods, transmitters and transceivers for transmitting a user signal, particularly a speech or video signal on a circuit- switched connection in a cellular radio network when the bit rate of the user signal varies during transmission. The transmitter comprises a source (2) of a variable bit rate user signal, such as a speech or video encoder, and a channel encoder (3) and a radio transmitter unit (7) having an adjustable transmitting power. The capacity allocated for the circuit-switched connection corresponds to the maximum rate of the user signal. The channel encoder (3) has, for the maximum bit rate of the user signal, a first, relatively the least efficient channel coding or no channel coding at all, and for each lower bit rate of the user signal a relatively more efficient channel coding that utilizes the capacity of the circuit-switched connection, released by the lower transfer rate, for improving the interference tolerance of the connection. The transmitting power of the radio transmitter unit depends on the channel coding used by the channel encoder so that the transmitting power is reduced with the increased efficiency of the channel coding, while the bit- error-rate remains substantially constant. This results in a lower average power level and thus in a reduced interference level in the cellular network.
L'invention concerne des procédés, des transmetteurs et des transcepteurs pour transmettre un signal utilisateur, en particulier un signal audio ou vidéo, sur une liaison commutée dans un réseau radio cellulaire, quand le débit des bits du signal utilisateur varie durant la transmission. Le transmetteur comprend une source (2) d'un signal utilisateur à débit de bits variable, comme par exemple un codeur audio ou vidéo, un codeur canal (3), ainsi qu'une unité de transmission radio (7) ayant une puissance de transmission ajustable. La capacité allouée à la liaison commutée correspond au débit maximum du signal utilisateur. Le codeur canal (3) a, pour le débit de bits maximum du signal utilisateur, un premier codage canal moins efficace ou absent et, pour chaque débit de bits plus bas du signal utilisateur, il a un codage canal plus efficace qui utilise la capacité de la liaison commutée, libérée par le débit de transfert plus bas, pour améliorer la tolérance d'interférence de la liaison. La puissance de transmission de l'unité du transmetteur radio dépend du code canal utilisé par le codeur canal, de sorte que la transmission de puissance est diminuée et l'efficacité du codage canal augmentée, alors que le taux d'erreur des bits reste sensiblement constant. Ceci permet un niveau de puissance moyenne plus bas et donc une diminution des interférences dans le réseau cellulaire.
