ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A variable speed belt drive is preferably used as an accessory drive for an automotive vehicle, and has an input shaft connected to the engine and an output shaft connected to an accessory. Power is transmitted from the input shaft to the output shaft through a vari- able pitch pulley on the input shaft, an endless belt, and a variable pitch pulley on the output shaft. A torque- responsive mechanism is connected to the pulley on the input shaft to decrease the diameter of the pulley as the load increases; and a speed-responsive mechanism is connected to the pulley on the output shaft to increase the diameter of the pulley as the speed of the output shaft increases. The torque-responsive mechanism is operated by a spring acting both in compression and in torsion, and is effective to partially overcome the speed- responsive mechanism when a high torque load is applied to the accessories thereby at least preventing high torque from causing a drop in speed of the accessories.
