A portable leaf blower (10) that includes a housing (12) having an inlet (14) and an outlet (16) and an impeller (28) adapted to generate an airflow from the inlet to the outlet. An electric motor (22) rotatably drives the impeller. The leaf blower includes a power control circuit (45) for substantially continuously varying the speed of the electric motor. A thumb wheel (46) mounted in the handle (30) of the leaf blower is used to control the amount of power delivered to the electric motor.
