VARIABLE SPOT SIZE SCANNING SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flying spot scanning system for scanning a laser beam to a photoreceptor is provided wherein the size of the spot may be varied for gray scale rendition. The tangential width of the reflecting surface or surfaces of a flying spot scanner varies along a sagittal axis so that gray scale imaging can be achieved by deflecting a video modulated light beam sagittally of the scanner in accordance with any gray scale content of the video.
