Abstract of the Disclosure A variable valve timing system comprises a valve operated by a cam through a rocker arm. The rocker arm is rockably mounted on a rocker arm shaft at an intermediate portion thereof. It has at one end portion thereof a tappet positioned to contact with the valve stem of the valve and at opposite end thereof a follower having a surface disposed in active position. The surface extends along a line that is disposed within a plane in which the axis of rotation of the cam lies and that forms an angle with the axis of rotation of the cam. The rocker arm is movable along the rocker arm shaft between a first position in which a tappet clearance, that is, a clearance between the cam and the surface of the follower, is maximum and a second posi- tion in which the clearance is minimum. An actuator is provided which responsive to engine operating con- ditions moves the rocker arm toward a second position against the action of a return spring that biases the rocker arm toward the first position. - 1 -
