ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A varistor fuse element is used for protecting electric circuits against overvoltages and overtemperatures. The fuse element has for electric connection a U-shaped first feed line and a second feed line which is constructed to be elastic, both feed lines being equipped with switching contacts lying opposite to each other. A varistor is connected, on the one hand, directly to the first feed line and, on the other hand, via a fusible alloy to the second feed line. In normal operation, the switching contacts are opened and a current flows through the varistor. When overvoltages occur, the forward current rises steeply in accordance with the I/U characteristic of the varistor. The varistor is heated by the power dissipation also considerably increasing in the varistor, which leads to the melting-off of the fusible alloy and consequently to the closing of the switching contact. As a result, the electric circuit to be protected is bridged in a low-resistance manner.
