There is disclosed an apparatus for suturing tissue comprising a) first and second arms; b) a first jaw supported by the first arm and a second jaw supported by the second arm, the jaws being relatively movable between an open and closed position; c) a first needle securing member movably positioned in the first jaw and a second needle securing member movably positioned in the second jaw; d) a reciprocating mechanism or moving each of the needle securing members between a needle securing position and a needle release position; and e) a ratchet mechanism for maintaining the first and second jaws in the closed position until one of the needle securing members is locked in the needle securing position.
