A data compression system using vector quantisation utilises a codebook or index tables constructed by finding a small set of points in an n-dimensional space which are representative of a much larger population. The space is partitioned such that the integrals of the probability density functions over all the subspaces are approximately equal and thereafter the centre of gravity of each subspace is taken to represent the subspace population. The partitioning is effected sequentially to map n-dimensional space into one dimensional code space.

Ce procédé de compression de données à l'aide d'une quantification vectorielle met en oeuvre des tables de codes ou d'indices construites par recherche d'un petit ensemble de points, dans un espace à n dimensions, qui soient représentatifs d'une population beaucoup plus grande. L'espace est divisé de façon que les intégrales des fonctions de densité de probabilité concernant tous les sous-espaces soient approximativement égales, et qu'ensuite le centre de gravité de chaque sous-espace soit pris pour représenter la population du sous-espace. On exécute la division de manière séquentielle afin de cartographier l'espace à n dimensions en un espace à codes dimensionnels.
