Abstract A hydraulic brake system for actuating wheel brake units of an off-highway load hauling vehicle is disclosed and comprises a primary source of system hydraulic pressure, a service brake subsystem and an emergency brake subsystem. The service brake subsystem controllably communicates actuating pressure to the wheel brake units, and includes wheel brake unit control valves actuable by the vehicle operator to govern the communication of pressure from the primary source to the wheel brake units. The emergency brake subsystem actuates the wheel brake units in response to sensed system hydraulic pressure levels below a predetermined level. An emergency hydraulic pressure source supplies hydraulic actuating pressure to brake units in response to brake system pressure levels below the predetermined level. The vehicle is constructed and arranged so that a power steering system is supplied from the primary hydraulic pressure source. This enables emergency braking in response to loss of power steering system operating pressure.
