An onboard communication system for use in a vehicle is provided. Typically, the system includes a signal source configured to provide a live audio and/or video signal of a first vehicle occupant, and an output device mounted within the vehicle and oriented toward a second vehicle occupant. The output device is configured to output the audio and/or video signal to the second vehicle occupant to enable the second vehicle occupant to monitor the first vehicle occupant. The output device may include a video display and/or a speaker. A control may be associated with the output device for selecting an input signal source for presentation via the output device. The signal source may be an onboard entertainment source, an onboard microphone and/or camera, a navigation unit, or a vehicle instrumentation source.
