A hollow structural member (30) for a vehicle is provided with a unitary energy absorbing end portion (34) having a reduced wall thickness (T2), for deforming and absorbing the force of an impact, and a site for initiating such deformation. The initiation site preferably comprises a taper of the end section. A method for forming the structural members includes the steps of reducing the wall thickness of the member end section and subsequent tapering of the end section.

La présente invention concerne un élément structurel creux (30) destiné à un véhicule et une partie extrémité à absorption d'énergie monobloc (34) qui possède une épaisseur de paroi (T¿2?)¿ ?réduite de façon à déformer et à absorber la force d'un choc et, un site destiné à initier cette déformation. Ce site d'initiation comprend de préférence un évasement de la partie extrémité. Cette invention concernant aussi un procédé de formation de ces éléments structurels qui consiste à réduire l'épaisseur de paroi de la partie extrémité de l'élément et l'évasement subséquent de la partie extrémité.
