A compact lamp assembly (10) for use in interior vehicle application such as reading and courtesy lighting. The lamp assembly (10) includes a housing (12), a circuit board (14), and an LED (16). The housing (10) has a front wall (20) with a concave portion and annular bezel (50), as well as a side wall (22) and several side walls (24-30). The concave surface includes an off-center opening (42) that is aligned along an axis (46) that forms an oblique angle with respect to the central axis (32) of the housing (12). The LED (16) is mounted to the circuit board (14) and is positioned to a protective interior space formed behind the opening (42) in the concave surface. When assembled, the LED (16) emits lights through the opening (42) such that it exits the lamp assembly (10) at an angle, traveling along the axis (46) of the opening (42) rather than along the central axis (32) of the housing (12).
