A vehicle lamp such as a bicycle tail lamp includes a tight emitting diode which emits light in a solid angle of about ~ 180°. The light emitting diode is arranged in such a way that in operation the central axis of the solid angle into which the light emitting diode emits light is directed approximately horizontally. The lamp includes an optically active element which leaves substantially unchanged the angular distribution of the light emitted by the light emitting diode in the horizontal direction, while however focusing the light emitted in a vertical direction.
