ABSTRACT A load monitoring system for a road vehicle has a strain link mounted at a location on the vehicle which has been carefully chosen to provide an accurate and reliable representation of the applied load. Ideally this location is centrally of and on top of a single- wheeled axle of the vehicle. A microprocessor-controlled computing apparatus processes the sensor output to provide computer outputs representing such load parameters as. axle weights gross vehicle weight, and payload, and a combined display and manual control console has a digital display which can be made to display all of the load parameters in a predetermined sequence. The system has an inclinometer for measuring vehicle inclination and compensates for such inclination at the time of measurement. Also, the system can compensate for fuel level so as always to give readings for the load parameters as if the tank or tanks were full. These features combine in the disclosed embodiment to provide the accuracy required to ensure compliance with strict legal requirements without having to substantially underload the vehicle.
