ABSTRACT A vehicle monitoring unit for installation in a vehicle includes a receiver for receiving a radio transmission from a transmitter located in the vicinity of the vehicle and a central processing unit connected to the receiver and adapted to process and store information sent from the receiver. A device is provided for visually displaying information stored in or received by the central processing unit. A number of sensors are mounted in the vehicle for determining or measuring certain physical parameters such as the weight of the vehicle and converting the sensed or measured parameters to electrical signals indicative thereof. Electrical wires connect the sensors to the processing unit. There is also a transmitter for sending information concerning the vehicle by radio transmission to a vehicle monitoring station, for example a station operated by the state or provincial department of transport. A power supply unit including at least one battery is provided to power the monitoring unit of the vehicle. The weight sensors can comprise Hall effect/magnetic sensors mounted on axle assemblies of the vehicle and capable of producing a suitable signal indicative of the weight.
