A vehicle safety belt test apparatus (10) and method is described. The apparatus is comprised of a frame (11) which is adapted to be positioned on a seat (12) of a vehicle and disposed to distribute pressure substantially evenly on the seat. One or more pistons (16) are secured to the frame and to a seat belt support curved member (15). The support curved member (15) is adapted to receive opposed free ends of two spaced-apart seat belt portions (21, 21') of a seat belt thereover with a buckle (22') of the seat belt securing the opposed free ends together. The seat belt portions (21, 21') are secured at a securing end (35) to a frame of a vehicle. A pressure control device (17) is provided to actuate the pistons (16) to displace the seat belt support member (15) relative to the frame whereby to exert a predetermined force on the seat belt portions (21, 21') to test the restraining strength of the seat belt.

L'appareil comprend un cadre (11) conçu pour être placé sur le siège (12) d'un véhicule et disposé de façon à appliquer une pression essentiellement uniforme sur le siège. Un ou plusieurs pistons (16) sont fixés au cadre et à une pièce recourbée (15) servant d'appui à la ceinture de sécurité. Cette pièce d'appui recourbée (15) reçoit les extrémités libres opposées des deux sections espacées de la ceinture de sécurité (21, 21') et la boucle (22') servant à joindre les extrémités libres de la ceinture de sécurité. L'extrémité d'ancrage (35) de chacune des sections espacées de la ceinture (21, 21') est fixée au châssis du véhicule. Un dispositif de commande de la pression (17) actionne les pistons (16) qui déplacent la pièce d'appui (15) par rapport au cadre afin d'exercer une force préétablie sur les sections de la ceinture de sécurité (21, 21') afin de tester la force de retenue de cette dernière.
