A vehicle seat (10) includes a generally horizontal sitting portion (12) connected to a generally vertical backrest (14), and an armrest (16) connected to the sitting portion or the armrest. At least one of the sitting portion (12), or the armrest (16) includes a plastically deformable cellular structural material (20) arranged therein. Another embodiment is an armrest for a vehicle seat including an elastically deformable cushion material (28) and a plastically deformable cellular structural material (20). A variation of the armrest (16) includes a barrier (30) interposed between the cushion material and the cellular structural material. For each embodiment, the cellular structural material (20) includes at least one hollow cell (50) having walls disposed normal to the direction a side impact force acts during a collision, whereby the cellular structural material (20) absorbs energy as it is permanently deformed during a collision.
