ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a spring suspension system for vehicles, particularly for passenger-carrying rail vehicles, one of its principal advantages being its ease of retrofit to upgrade existing systems employing vertical coil springs. The vertically-movable journal boxes are provided with vertical metal friction surfaces cooperating with longitudinally and laterally spring urged low friction surfaces mounted on the vehicle frame. Small displacements of the boxes are accommodated by "internal friction" in the longitudinal springs without appreciable relative movement between the friction surfaces, but larger displacements cause such movement with consequent application of sliding friction damping forces. The preferred form of the longitudinal springs is elastomer springs of chevron cross-section disposed with the chevron cross-section horizontal, so that they provide both the lateral and the longitudinal springing. The system is also applicable to other systems, such as the secondary suspension between the frame and a body-supporting bolster thereon.
