Vehicle Transfer Gear and Drive Line Brake Mechanism Abstract A vehicle transfer gear and drive line brake mechanism includes a depending gear transfer train having a rotatable shaft and an output gear connected to the shaft. A drive line brake assembly having a brake body and a plurality of annular plates and discs is operatively associated with the shaft on a lower axis, and a housing is provided for defining with the brake body an enclosed compartment for containing them and a common lubricating fluid. The drive line brake assembly is modularized to allow the removal thereof with the brake body from the output shaft without affecting the output gear. A baffle element divides the enclosed compartment into a brake chamber containing the brake assembly and a separate sump chamber and directs fluid away from the brake chamber to the sump chamber in response to rotation of the shaft in order to reduce fluid drag losses.
