A vehicle, such as, e.g., a diesel-powered truck, is disclosed that has a transmission control system that, e.g., improves fuel efficiency and/or consumption. In some embodiments, the vehicle includes: an engine that powers said vehicle; a transmission to change ratios between engine speed and wheel speed; and at least one control unit configured to shift the transmission in a plurality of lower gears substantially against the governed speed of the engine and to sift the transmission in a plurality of higher gears substantially against the peak torque speed of the engine.
