An apparatus measures the tread of a tyre on a vehicle, in which a laser line generator (34) generates an elongate pattern of light. Mirrors (36) are arranged to reflect light from the laser line generator (34) onto the rolling surface of the tyre. Mirrors (36, 38, 42) are arranged to reflect light from different regions of the rolling surface of the tyre towards a camera (32). The camera images the regions of the rolling surface of the tyre. The apparatus may be hand-held or arranged such that a tyre to be imaged is driven onto or over it.

Un appareil mesurant les sculptures d'un pneu d'un véhicule comprend un générateur de raies laser (502) qui génère un motif de lumière allongé. Des miroirs (508, 510) sont conçus pour réfléchir la lumière émise par ledit générateur de raies laser (502) sur la surface de roulement du pneu. Un miroir (512) est destiné à réfléchir la lumière émise par la surface de roulement du pneu vers l'appareil photo (506). Cet appareil photo (506) capture l'image d'une région de la surface de roulement du pneu. L'appareil mesurant les sculptures d'un pneu peut être portatif ou conçu de manière à ce qu'un pneu dont l'image doit être capturée soit entraîné sur lui ou au-dessus de lui.
