A deep pile, fur-like material is used in an automated vehicle washing apparatus to simulate a vehicle hand wash. The vehi- cle washing apparatus (30) uses a resilient drum constructed of a pair of spaced apart disks (32, 34) and an elastic cord (46) which extends between the disks around the circumference of each disk. A cover (54) is wrapped around the cord (46), and over a por- tion of the plates (32, 34), so that the cover (54) rotates with the plates (32, 34), which rotate with the shaft (20). The cover includes a plurality of shingles (70) which extend radially outwardly under centrifugal force. The shingles (70) are preferably made of a deep pile fur-like material. Alternatively, a foam core member (77) wrapped around a rotatable support (67) carries a cover (79) which is made of deep pile, fur-like material.
