It is common for a household to have a toilet in the bathroom. The odours associated with the use of such a facility are normally vented through a fan in the ceiling of the room. This is very inefficient, since the room fills with the offending odour, and then all the air in the room is evacuated by the ceiling fan over a period of 15 minutes or so. In winter, the replacement air needs to be heated, and the fan and furnace must use electricity and gas to accomplish the task. It is much more prudent to ventilate the toilet, capturing the odour as it is generated in the small space of the toilet bowl, preventing contamination of the room air. This would add to the comfort of the occupant, and save considerable energy.
