An apparatus for the venting of a toilet includes a toilet seat with an opening disposed in the front thereof to permit air to enter into the space disposed in a toilet bowl cavity and an exhaust outlet that is disposed in the rear of the seat. A pair of sealing members ensure that air and gas can only pass through the opening provided and the exhaust outlet and not through the space that is disposed under the toilet seat intermediate the toilet rim. A DC brushless motor includes a fan and is disposed out of the interior space of the bathroom and is used to suck (i.e. to create a vacuum) and draw the air and gas out of the toilet bawl cavity. A motion detector turns the fan motor on and off when a presence is detected upon or proximate the toilet. The system operates automatically, uses little energy, and is so quiet that it typically cannot be heard. A passive version that vents by convection is also described.
