A venting device for a culture bottle hav- ing a seal incorporating a septum comprising an outer sleeve (702) in which a guide tube (704) is axially slidable and a needle carrier (706) which is axially slidable in the guide tube. The complete device is a sterile package sealed by a foil (712) at the forward end of the outer sleeve. In operation, the guide tube first moves to cut and deflect the foil, and the needle carrier then moves to cause the needle to penetrate the bot- tle septum. Asepticity is maintained substan- tially up to the moment of septum penetration by virtue of use of the guide tube for cutting and deflecting the foil out of the path of the needle.
