In a sanitary drain system in a house or other building, there exists a number of fittings called P-traps. There is one at each fixture. (ie. sink, tub, etc.). A P-traps purpose is to hold back a small portion of water to block the drain system at the fixture. This blockage stops sewer gases and odours from returning back through the fixture into the house or building. In order for the P-trap to function properly it requires an air vent to be connected to the drain system about 12 inches downstream from the P-trap, the air vent serves to equalize the atmospheric pressure changes that occur within the system when water is flowing through it (ie. emptying a sink). Without the air vent the small portion of water (the trap is supposed to retain) is drawn out by a syphoning effect caused by the velocity of the flowing water when for example emptying a sink. This allows sewer gases to return through the dry trap and out through the sink. As an alternative to the P-trap this invention directs the water into a retaining chamber which is larger than the drain pipe system downstream from the chamber. This chamber being larger causes the velocity of the water to decrease as it flows through it, this allows gravity to capture the water in the chamber and results in air bubbles passing through the water to relieve the syphoning effect, and a portion of water remains in the chamber to create the trap. Hence this invention does not require an air vent.
