A method and system for authorizing a user to perform a financial transaction using a financial account. The method includes receiving an authorization request from a user to access a financial account. The authorization service initiates at least one authorization transaction using the financial account. The amounts of the authorization transactions may be minimal, such as less than one dollar. The amounts of each authorization transaction are withheld from the user. The user is prompted to perform a mathematical operation using the amounts of the authorization transaction. If the user is capable of retrieving the amounts and performing the mathematical operation, the authentication service determines that the user is authorized to perform financial transactions using the financial account. Therefore, upon receiving a proffered result from the user, the authorization service grants the authorization request if the proffered result is correct.
