ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A vertical axis wind turbine has an open rigid frame structure. A rotor assembly has upper and lower face plates, each having a stub shaft protruding therefrom along a central axis for rotatably mounting the rotor assembly within the open rigid frame structure. A pair of vertically stacked, angularly offset S-shaped rotors are rigidly interconnected and mounted for rotation about a vertical axis within the open frame structure. Each of the rotors has a smooth continuous profile extending completely across the rotor assembly without interruption, the profile being defined by a pair of oppositely directed cup portions meeting at the central axis and extending outwardly therefrom to the periphery of the rotor assembly so that each of the rotors presents a smooth continuous surface to incident wing across the width of the rotor assembly. A power take-off is coupled to the rotors for extracting power from the turbine.
