Abstract of the Disclosure A vertical synchronization (sync) signal detector for use in television reception is disclosed. From a T.V. video signal a composite sync signal comprising horizontal sync pulses, vertical sync pulses and equalizing pulses is removed. A phase controlled oscillator senses when all of these three signals which make up the composite sync signal are constant. Since only the vertical sync signal will be low during such 'constant' periods the starting point of the vertical sync pulse can be located. Thus, the phase controlled oscillator is arranged to generate timing pulses during such 'constant' periods and these timing pulses are used to control a samp- ling circuit which samples the composite sync signal and thereby separates the vertical sync signal.
