ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A vertically-adjustable drafting table having a base with a pair of telescoping support columns defining an open area between the columns suitable for accommodating any of a variety of modular storage unit combinations is disclosed. Each column is composed of telescoping upper and lower sections, the lower sections being secured to a horizontal beam and the upper sections being attached to a table top. A cable extends in an endless loop through the beam and upwardly into each of the columns. Guides in the form of pulleys are disposed within each of the columns and within the beam for guiding movement of the loop of cable, and sections of those stretches of cable extending upwardly into the columns are secured to the upper column sections. A spring disposed within the base urges the loop of cable in one direction to counterbalance the combined weight of the upper column sections and the table top. In one embodiment, the pulleys within the columns are adjustably mounted upon stalks disposed within the columns, thereby permitting adjustment of the tension of the cable loop.
