The present invention provides a DNA sequence encoding a beta keto-acyl-CoA synthase (condensing enzyme) that catalyzes the synthesis of very long chain fatty acids in plants. This DNA sequence can be used for genetic engineering of the chain length of fatty acids in a wide variety of eukaryotic cells, including microorganisms such as yeast. In plants, it is useful for manipulation of fatty acid composition in seed oils, and composition and accumulation of cuticular and epicuticular wax.
