Very low sulfur content hydrocarbon gas is achieved by sequentially contacting the gas first with zinc oxide and then with nickel metal. This has reduced the total sulfur content of natural gas feed for a fluid bed syngas generator to less than 0.1 ppm and has resulted in greater syngas productivity. A zinc oxide guard bed downstream of the syngas generator reduces the total sulfur content of the syngas to less than 10 vppb and preferably less that 5 vppb. This very low sulfur content syngas is used for sulfur sensitive processes, such as hydrocarbon synthesis. The process is especially useful for natural gas which contains H2S, COS, mercaptans and other sulfur bearing compounds.
Selon l'invention, on obtient un gaz d'hydrocarbures à taux de soufre très réduit en mettant successivement en contact ledit gaz avec de l'oxyde de zinc puis avec du nickel. On réduit ainsi à moins de 0,1 partie par million le taux total de soufre d'un gaz naturel destiné à alimenter un générateur de gaz synthétique à lit fluidisé. Un lit de sûreté contenant de l'oxyde de zinc situé en aval du générateur de gaz réduit le taux total de soufre du gaz synthétique à moins de 10 parties par milliard et de préférence à moins de 5 parties par milliard. Ce gaz synthétique à taux de soufre très réduit est utile pour des procédés sensibles au soufre, tels que la synthèse d'hydrocarbures. Le procédé selon l'invention est particulièrement utile pour des gaz contenant H¿2?S, COS, des thiols et autres composés sulfurés.
