The present invention provides a vessel puncturing device comprising: (i) a chamber having a base and a drainage port; (ii) a spike projecting into the chamber along the longitudinal axis of the chamber; (iii) a piston slidable within the chamber and in sealing engagement therewith, said piston being moveable from a receiving position to a puncturing position, said piston having a seal on a first face directed away from the base for engagement with a first surface of a vessel and an aperture extending through the piston from the first face; (iv) a spring to bias the piston to the receiving position; (v) a retainer to engage the vessel and hold it against the seal; and (vi) a drive mechanism operable on the retainer to move the vessel and piston against the spring from the receiving position to the puncturing position, such that the vessel is punctured by the spikes to permit drainage of contents of the vessel into the chamber and out of the drainage port, said piston and container cooperating to define an enclosed volume as said vessel is removed from said spike.
