A vibrating stimulation system for interrupting apnea in infants comprised of a support surface fixed to a base by dampers. Vibrations are generated by a motor rigidly mounted to the support surface that rotates the eccentric mass in the horizontal plane about a vertical axis. The motion induced by rotating the eccentric mass is primarily in the horizontal plane. Motion may be induced upon detection of arrested breathing by an apnea monitoring device known in the art. The vibrating stimulation system interrupts apneic episodes by manually vibrating or shaking an infant. The invention may used as a stand alone system that replaces a mattress or may be fixed to a crib and used in conjunction with a conventional mattress.
