ABSTRACT A roll with a roll-shell rotating about a stationary central axis. A first chamber located in the interior of the roll is filled with fluid which transfers a hydraulic supporting force from the central axis to the roll-shell. The said first chamber is connected, through at least one choke-point, to a second chamber also located in the interior of the roll which is at all times only partly filled with fluid. Thus, in the event of a change in pressure in the first chamber, the volume of liquid in the second chamber can change quickly. When therefore the roll-shell tends to vibrate, fluid flows back and forth through the choke point and, as a result of fluid-friction, vibrational energy is converted into frictional heat.
