ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A vibration diagnosing method for a rotary machine for diagnosing a vibration in a rotor of the rotary machine by detecting the number of rotations and the vibration in the rotor when the rotor is rotating, comprising means for extracting an unbalance vibration component synchronized with the number of rotations from a signal representing a vibration of the rotor detected, means for judging as to whether the unbalance vibration component is normal or abnormal, depending on the result of the comparison of the extracted unbalance vibration component with its allowance; means for calculating an abnormal vibration component through a vector operation by using the unbalance vibration component and a rotor vibration component in a normal state of the rotor, which is previously stored, when the unbalance vibration component is judged to be abnormal, and normalizing a vibration pattern of the abnormal vibration component; and means for calculating an unbalance originating position in the rotor, which generates the abnormal vibration, by using a comparison of the normalized abnormal vibration pattern with a norma- lized vibration pattern of the previously stored unbalanced vibration, means which compares the amplitudes in the normalized abnormal vibration pattern with those in the normalized vibration pattern previously stored and judges that the position having the approximate amplitudes is the unbalance generating position; and a quantity of the unbalance is calculated by the abnormal vibration component vector opeated, the unbalance generating position, and the influence coefficient of the unbalance vibration previously stored.
