A video compression system (Fig. 2) is disclosed that is optimized to take advantage of the types of redundancies typically occurring on computer screen (11) and the types of video loss acceptable to real time interative computer users (11). It automatically adapts to a wide variety of changing network (29) bandwidth conditions and can accommodate any video resolution and an unlimited number of colors. The video compression encoder can be implemented with either hardware or software and it compresses the source video into a series of data packets that are a fixed length of 8 bits or more.

L'invention concerne un système de compression vidéo (figure 2) qui est optimisé pour tirer profit des types de redondances qui se produisent généralement sur un écran d'ordinateur (11) et des types de perte vidéo qui peuvent être acceptés par des utilisateurs d'ordinateurs interactifs en temps réel (11). Ledit système peut s'adapter automatiquement à une importante diversité de conditions changeantes de largeurs de bandes de réseau (29) et il peut répondre à toute résolution vidéo et à un nombre illimité de couleurs. Ce codeur de compression vidéo peut être implémenté avec du matériel ou des logiciels et il permet de comprimer la source vidéo en une série de paquets de données qui constituent une longueur fixe d'au moins 8 bits.
