The object is to develop a VHS recorder such that, besides the conventional analogue VHS recording, the compatible recording of a digital picture signal is additionally possible. The VHS signal is initially recorded by a first head (K1) over the full depth (S0) of the magnetic layer. Subsequently, the digital picture signal (MPEG) is recorded by a second head (K2) of smaller gap width in the upper part (S1) of the magnetic layer.
