A distortion corrector circuit (11) arranged in the signal path (1) of the frequency-modulated brightness signal of a video recorder between the video tape (2) and the frequency demodulator (3) acts as a band-pass filter whenever the brightness signals fall below a certain threshold level (U16) and switches to act as an amplitude-controlled transmission time retarder whenever the brightness signals exceed the said threshold level. The phase errors produced during recording and transmission are substantially compensated in the latter mode, while in the former state oscillation sequences with atrophied oscillations have their amplitude resuscitated by the resonance effect. The threshold level (U16) is set by means of a disturbed signal recognition circuit (21) that detects the number and rate of the oscillations that do not exceed a certain recognition threshold of the disturbed signal recognition circuit that lies close to the switching point line of the frequency demodulator. In this way the distortion corrector circuit is adapted to the different reproduction qualities of different video tapes in such a manner as to obtain image reproduction with the least possible disturbance and the greatest possible definition.
