The distance between the clamps (112) at opposed ends (16, 18) of a shoulder rest bridge (10) adjustable in infinitely fine increments by utilizing a pressure plate (26) which, in an engaged mode, presses a brake member (36) made from an elastomer, particularly soft rubber, against the underside (14) of the bridge body. The pressure plate (26) is actuated by a pivotable latch (48) having a lever (66) and co- operating with a non-rotatable bearing member (90) having a ramp surface (102) complementary in the direction of incline and in pitch with the ramp surface (76) of the pivotable latch. A supplementary camming mechanism (64, 82, 84, 86, 88) provides, upon hand displacement of one of the clamps (112) towards the other into engagement by both with the instrument, an additional motion of the one clamp (112) toward the instrument thus increasing the clamping force holding the shoulder rest to an instrument.
