The present invention provides a VLAN system which allows traditional trunk stations, i.e. stations resident on the trunk which are not VLAN-aware, to be configured within a LAN. The present invention also provides a VLAN system that facilitates both unicast and multicast communications to trunk stations configured within a VLAN and provides A VLAN system in which a trunk station communicates only with members of LAN's within its own VLAN.
